Thermal printing on labels materials uses a form of digital printing, a thermal print head applies heat to a wax or resin coated polyester film ribbon. When heated the ink layer is transferred and adheres to label materials such as paper, and more durable alternatives including polyester and polypropylene.

Thermal transfer printing has increased in popularity over the past few years due to the ease of use and the relative price of printers themselves.
